Stopover, Inc. has over 35 years of experience supporting Indianapolis adolescents and their families through family crises operating an emergency shelter/crisis intervention program for Indianapolis youth ages 11-17.

The Stopover Transitional Living Program takes these services to the next level by helping older adolescents who are no longer able to live at home make a successful transition to independent living.

MISSION

Guided by our commitment to innovative service and compassionate care, Stopover has worked since 1970 toward the enhancement of the lives of central Indiana's most vulnerable and disenfranchised residents—youth involved in family crisis. We provide a uniquely warm and welcoming shelter home, transitional living programs, home-based and family-centered counseling, youth support groups, a crisis hot line, and community outreach and education. Stopover especially embraces those youth excluded from traditional social services systems, and, in accord with our grassroots and community-based origins, addresses each client as an individual with unique strengths and needs.

HISTORY

Stopover, Inc. began in 1970 as a program to provide services to young people who had run away from home and was affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. In 1981, Stopover began planning a new approach to service delivery—home-based, family-centered counseling eventually incorporating it the crisis intervention and group home programs. Stopover is currently affiliated with the John H. Boner Community Center a community-based, not-for-profit social service agency that provides programs and services responsive to the needs of the diverse population of the near eastside of Indianapolis. Through the affiliation with the Boner Center, Stopover became eligible to receive support funding from United Way of Central Indiana. The Transitional Living Program began in 2008 following a grant from the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

Since its inception in 1970, Stopover has served over 5,000 runaway, homeless, abused, and neglected youth. Stopover’s mission continues to be to provide a safe and supportive environment for youth in crisis, and to serve and support families to enhance their ability to care for their children and youth.
